    Ninety-nine names

    I invent
    ninety-nine names for hope,
    I call them
    chair, table, bed,
    bread, coffee, wine,
    rain, sun, thunderstorm,
    pain, health,
    love, sleep, bird, tree, child.
    I also invent ninety-nine names
    for humanity
    and write them
    in my pocket diary.
    At the end of the year
    I hand them over:
    January 11,
    the rising cost of basic foodstuffs
    does not erase the memory
    of the breaking of bread;
    April 12,
    the military dictatorship
    does not prevent the thunderstorm
    from purifying the air above the city;
    October 13,
    torture
    does not erase the taste
    of a kiss from the lips.
    Hope, humanity:
    Hunger, fear, and violence
    will belong
    in the museum
    of extinct words.
