out the back
As part of my daily spiritual practice, I make sure I not just ‘look out the back’, but go out there and spend time to investigate.
The things that are hidden from view are often the things that are not meant to be seen (in society). Most people would not go around the back to see the dumpsters and experience the smell and visceral nature of what is perceived as ‘ugly’.
If I am to grow, I need to take a daily inventory of all that I have, not just the ‘good’ things.
Metaphor is a powerful thing because language is how we construct reality. These days I’m no longer afraid to go ‘out the back’ and spend some valuable time there.
over & under
stairs, ladders, tunnels, bridges, basements, roofs etc. etc. all have an ability to draw me in.
It’s is also the metaphorical nature of these places & things that also interest me.
i.e. the term ‘over the top’ was first phrased in the first world war. (going over the top of the trench to fight the enemy) which often would result in death.
